Phase 1, also known as interceptive orthodontic treatment, focuses on addressing a child’s bite, teeth alignment, airway, and oral habits at an early stage. This proactive approach sets the foundation for a more straightforward and less invasive orthodontic treatment during adolescence, known as Phase 2. Typically lasting 6-18 months, Phase 1 is recommended for children aged 6-10 and aims to reduce the risk of severe orthodontic issues later in life, such as impacted canines, jaw surgeries, or premolar extractions.
Phase 1 treatment utilizes functional appliances, braces, or clear aligners to correct various orthodontic concerns. These include overjet, overbite, crossbites, negative overjet, impacted canines, oral habits, deep bites, open bites, and airway or sleep-disordered breathing issues, ensuring a healthier, more functional dental development.
